Unnakkaya is a spindle shaped sweet dessert made chiefly of Plantain . It originated from the Malabar  region of India,it is a sweety and delicious snack made with plantains and stuffed with a sweet coconut and dry nut filling. Unnakkaya is popular during the Ramadan.
Banana (semi ripe)- 4 nos
Coconut oil- for frying
Grated coconut – 1 ½cup
Sugar – 4 tbsp
Cashew nuts -1 tbsp (sliced)
Cardamom powder-  ½ tsp
Ghee-1 tbsp
Raisins-1 tbsp
Ghee- 1tbsp
  • Cut the bananas into two pieces and cook well in steam.
  • Once it is cooked, remove the outer skin of the banana and mash it well using a spoon.
  • Mix the grated coconut with sugar in a pan and saute until light golden color
  • And fry the cashew nuts and raisins in ghee. then add this with the ghee to the coconut -sugar mixture.
  • Add cardamom and mix  it well. Take out from the flame.
  • Take a ball sized banana dough and flatten it using your palms.
  • Add the filling  on to it  and close the edges well.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan and deep fry the unnakkaya until it becomes golden color.
